The Marché d´Alligre is a daily market on the Place d´Alligre in Paris (between Gare de Lyon and Place de la Bastille). It is set up every morning and dismantled at lunchtime. The rich offer consists of vegetables, but also clothes, pictures, jewelry, dishes, books etc. are offered. Similar to a flea market. During my multiple scholarship stays at the Cité Internationale des Arts I went to this place again and again, fascinated by the market events and the Sisyphus-like energy of the “dealers”. 5 hours daily presentation, hope for sales and social contact. Always in the same rhythm until neutralization by urban street sweepers – almost a metaphor for life.
It is a place of needs, desires and longings for “discoveries”. An indefinite hope for something beautiful, special or useful. Looking, searching, rummaging in the “gift-goods world” is an extremely hopeful activity.
From my biographically based affinity for textiles, I translate the experienced diversity of people and actions into fabrics which forms, patterns and materiality as a human shell fascinate me.
In my work, I formally combine objective, illusionistic and printed photography with a gestural, emotional application of color. In this way the perception of the media and materials is mixed and questioned. Painting becomes photographic illusionism and photography an abstract painted surface.
Since 2014 I have been dealing with the subject of the market as a trade and human meeting place. In times of corona virus and social distancing, however, this becomes more topical. The marketplace becomes a place of longing.
